Our Mission

The Beltway Signal exists to cover not just what defense organizations announce, but what they do, how they operate, and why it matters. We report on the organizations, technologies, policies, and people shaping American defense — from DARPA program managers to defense startup founders, from Capitol Hill appropriations fights to quiet acquisitions in the contractor space.

Founded in 2014 by former Defense News reporter Catherine Holt, the Signal started as a weekly email newsletter tracking defense procurement trends. It grew into a full digital publication known for source-driven reporting, deep institutional knowledge, and a willingness to cover the mid-tier defense organizations that larger outlets ignore.

We are independently owned and operated. We don't accept sponsored content or pay-for-play coverage. Our reporting is funded by subscriptions, events, and a small portfolio of non-editorial partnerships with defense industry conferences.

We focus on:

  • Organizations — profiles, leadership changes, strategic shifts
  • Technology — emerging capabilities, AI/ML in defense, cyber
  • Policy — procurement reform, appropriations, regulatory changes
  • People — the careers, decisions, and influence of defense leaders
  • Industry dynamics — M&A, partnerships, competitive landscape

"The defense industry has no shortage of press releases. It has a shortage of journalism."

Catherine Holt, Founder

Our Standards

The principles that guide every piece we publish.

Editorial Independence

No Sponsored Content

Every article we publish is written by our journalists, driven by our editorial judgment. We do not accept payment for coverage, and we never will. Our readers trust us because we answer to them — not to the organizations we cover.

Source Protection

Absolute Confidentiality

Many of the people who talk to us do so at professional risk. We protect our sources absolutely. We will go to court before we reveal a confidential source, and we have the legal counsel to back that up.

Accuracy

Truth First

If we print it, it's true. If we're not sure, we don't print it. Every fact is verified, every quote is confirmed, and every story goes through editorial review before publication. Speed matters, but accuracy matters more.

Independence

No Pay-for-Play

Our partnerships with defense industry conferences are clearly separated from our editorial operations. No partner, advertiser, or sponsor has any influence over what we cover or how we cover it. Period.
