Our Mission

The Beltway Signal exists to cover not just what defense organizations announce, but what they do, how they operate, and why it matters. We report on the organizations, technologies, policies, and people shaping American defense — from DARPA program managers to defense startup founders, from Capitol Hill appropriations fights to quiet acquisitions in the contractor space.

Founded in 2014 by former Defense News reporter Catherine Holt, the Signal started as a weekly email newsletter tracking defense procurement trends. It grew into a full digital publication known for source-driven reporting, deep institutional knowledge, and a willingness to cover the mid-tier defense organizations that larger outlets ignore.

We are independently owned and operated. We don't accept sponsored content or pay-for-play coverage. Our reporting is funded by subscriptions, events, and a small portfolio of non-editorial partnerships with defense industry conferences.

2014

Founded as a Newsletter

Catherine Holt leaves Defense News and launches The Beltway Signal as a weekly email newsletter tracking defense procurement trends. Written entirely by Holt, funded by savings and freelance consulting.

2016

5,000 Subscribers

The Signal crosses 5,000 subscribers, driven by word-of-mouth among defense professionals who value its source-driven reporting and willingness to cover the mid-tier firms larger outlets ignore.

2019

First Full-Time Hire

Dana Reeves joins as Managing Editor, the Signal's first full-time employee. Her arrival transforms the operation from a one-woman newsletter into a real newsroom with editorial processes and a publication calendar.

2021

Full Digital Publication

The Signal launches its full website, introduces subscription tiers, and begins publishing daily. Editorial staff expands with the addition of senior reporters covering defense industry and technology beats.

2023

Operations Expansion

The team grows to include dedicated operations, audience growth, partnerships, and design staff. Conference partnerships provide a sustainable revenue model alongside subscriptions.

2026

Today
