Catherine Holt spent fourteen years in defense journalism — the last five as deputy managing editor at Defense News — before she concluded that the industry's most important stories were being covered by people who didn't understand it and ignored by people who did. She founded the Signal in 2014 as a weekly email newsletter sent to 400 people. Today it reaches 28,000.
Before journalism, Holt served as a Navy intelligence officer. She holds a B.A. from Georgetown and an M.S. from the National Intelligence University. Her editorial standard is simple: “If we print it, it's true. If we're not sure, we don't print it.”

Dana Reeves was covering defense appropriations at CQ Roll Call when Holt offered her a job that didn't yet exist at a publication that didn't yet have an office. She became the Signal's first full-time hire in 2019 and turned a one-woman newsletter into a real newsroom.
Reeves runs day-to-day editorial. She edits every piece before it publishes, mentors the reporting staff, and maintains the source relationships that give the Signal its edge. A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, she is the reason the Signal reads the way it does.
