The Archon Institute, one of the mid-Atlantic's most established defense research organizations, has hired Nora Tanaka as its first Director of Communications — a new position that signals a deliberate shift toward public engagement for the historically low-profile firm.

Tanaka joins Archon from the RAND Corporation, where she spent six years managing media relations and public affairs. Before RAND, she held communications roles at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the Department of State's Bureau of Public Affairs. She holds a master's degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School.

"Archon has always let the work speak for itself," said David Chen, the Institute's CEO, in a brief statement. "But the landscape has changed. Public trust in defense institutions matters, and earning it requires more than classified briefings and journal publications."

The hire comes at an interesting time for Archon. The Institute has expanded its partnerships division significantly over the past two years under Director of Partnerships Marcus Webb, and industry observers have noted a subtle but consistent increase in Archon's public-facing activity — more conference appearances, more published research summaries, and more engagement with policymakers outside the traditional defense establishment.

Tanaka told the Signal that her priorities include "building a communications infrastructure that matches the quality of Archon's research" and exploring public engagement opportunities that would be firsts for the organization. She declined to elaborate on specific plans.

The appointment is effective immediately. Tanaka reports directly to Chen.
